The animated GIF format seems to have risen from its ashes, after its glories in the distant past, in the heroic age of net.art. Having regained their popularity thanks to updated browsers -earlier ones did not support them- and fallen into disuse, pushed aside by online videos, the GIF seems to have returned with a greater specificity than that of serving as a clumsy imitation of a moving image. The loop format and the short duration of a GIF file rules out storytelling, confining the GIF to a new territory that could be described as "expanded photography". When viewing this series by Emilio Gomariz we may wonder if we are viewing a gallery of geometric art -or concrete kinetics-, or whether it is a mathematical statement converted into the visualization of a series of algorithms.
